Extra assignment 1: Typetopia

Go to https://www.typetopia.com/en/trial. Start practising. Keep playing the trial lesson until it is 100% complete. Finished? Take a screenshot of it and email it to me. Use this subject line: “Touch typing trial lesson”.

NOTE (#privacy): If the site asks for a name, you may use your own first name only. You may also choose a neat, cool nickname. If you create an avatar, do not take a photo of yourself. Choose an existing picture instead.

Extra assignment 2: Secure passwords

You will play an online assignment about secure passwords. During the game, you learn why a strong password is important and how to stop someone from easily getting into your account.

How to do it:

1. Go to Space Shelter.
2. Click Start or begin with the first assignment.
3. Read the explanation carefully before you answer.
4. Play all rounds/assignments as far as you can.
5. While playing, pay attention to tips about long passwords, capital letters, numbers, symbols and passwords you should not reuse.
6. Finished? Take a screenshot of the final screen and email it to me. Use this subject line: “space shelter completed”.

NOTE (#privacy): Do not enter your real password anywhere. If you need to make up an example, use a fake password that you do not use anywhere in real life.

Extra assignment 3: Interland

Interland is an online game by Google in which you learn how to be safe, smart and kind online. You play different islands with short assignments about online behaviour.

The five islands/themes:

• Think before you share: do not just post photos, personal details or messages online.
• Do not fall for fake: recognise phishing, fake messages and suspicious links.
• Protect your secrets: use strong passwords and secure your accounts.
• Be kind online: respond politely and help create positive online behaviour.
• Ask for help when needed: go to an adult, teacher or parent when you have online problems.

How to do it:

1. Go to Interland.
2. Choose one island that interests you.
3. Play the island as far as you can.
4. Pay close attention to the tips you receive during the game.
5. Finished? Take a screenshot of your final screen or certificate and email it to me. Use this subject line: “interland completed”.

NOTE (#privacy): Do not share personal information while playing. Use the game to practise making smart choices online.

Extra assignment 4: Blockly Games: Maze

With Blockly Games, you learn programming by dragging blocks. In the Maze assignment, you make a character walk through a maze step by step.

How to do it:

1. Go to Blockly Games: Maze.
2. Start at level 1.
3. Drag the programming blocks into the workspace.
4. Click Run to test whether your solution works.
5. Improve your solution if the character does not move through the maze correctly yet.
6. Try to complete as many levels as possible.
7. Finished? Take a screenshot showing that you completed the maze assignment and email it to me. Use this subject line: “maze completed”.

Tip: Keep thinking in small steps: forward, turn, test, improve. That is how programming works too.

Extra assignment 5: Animation video with Canva

In Canva, you will make a short animation video for new first-year students. The video is about the move from primary school to secondary school. The goal is that new students better know what to expect after watching your video.

How to do it:

1. Go to Canva and log in with your Nassau account.
2. Choose Video or search in Canva for animation video.
3. Make a short video of about 30 to 60 seconds.
4. Use at least 5 slides/scenes.
5. Put a short text on each scene that helps new first-year students.
6. Add suitable pictures, shapes, icons or animations.
7. Use transitions or movement, but keep it calm and clear.
8. Check whether your video is neat, positive and easy to understand.
9. Download your video or share the link according to your teacher’s instructions.

What should be included?

• A clear title, for example: Welcome to secondary school.
• At least 3 tips for new first-year students.
• Examples of things that are different from primary school.
• A reassuring ending: show that it is normal to need time to get used to a new school.

Ideas for scenes: the first school day, checking your timetable, finding classrooms, planning homework, getting to know new classmates, asking your mentor questions.

NOTE (#privacy): Do not use a photo of yourself or your classmates. It is better to use existing pictures, icons or illustrations from Canva. Write neatly and positively.
